August 2006 Newsletter

Welcome back to 2006-07 School year. We are looking forward to continuing the excellence and growing musically as a band program. We just completed summer band camp for the two summer parades and I am happy to announce that we have had our largest attendance ever. Please continue the hard work and dedication because all of this work is paying off. We marched 62 students at the Murdock Days parade on July 4th and will be marching at the Cass County Fair August 12.

New instrument purchases this year include a new trap set for the Jr./Sr. High Band and a new stand rack for the Murdock Music room. We will be moving the current (older) trap set into the Elmwood Building for football games (pep Band) and beginning training for the 5-6th percussionists. Our budget has been approved this year. We have maintained our normal expenditures, but with the increase in fuel prices our budget is in need to rise to meet these new demands.

The school board and booster club are doing a fantastic job in allocating money to our new uniform fund. To date we have over $8,000 ear-marked for new uniforms and anticipate simi liar gains this next year. We should be able to purchase new uniforms by 2008. When we purchase our new uniforms we will continue to put away a $1000 a year from the booster club, band fund, and school board in order to buy uniforms in a more manageable manner.

In our Student Accounts we have $4,400 in the 6-9th accounts. When the students enter the 9th grade the money in the 9th account ($1300) will be divided evenly amongst all the students in the 9th band. The 10-12 account currently is at $0 with the completion of the Chicago Tour. We will have two major fundraiser's, and possibly a couple of concession stands to run during basket ball season.

The Band Activity account currently has an estimated $8000. This money is used for the student accounts, uniform cleaning, emergency purchases, and Band council approved purchases.

The Uniform cleaning fee has risen to $20 to compensate the account for the purchase of new uniform bags. The students have complained over the years that we do not have enough bags, and the current bags are in dismal shape. With the purchase of the new bags, each student will have their own uniform bag that should breathe better which should keep the uniforms more fresh and clean. Next year we anticipate the uniform cleaning fee will go back to $15.00. If you have any questions or suggestions regarding the current band fees/deposits please consult the band syllabuses or the school office.

Good luck to everyone this year in band, we anticipate a great year continuing our growing tradition from last year. Our Jr. High band will have the opportunity to earn their 3rd consecutive superior at Malcolm contest and our High School band will have the opportunity to defend their trophy at the Harvest of Harmony and their District Superior Plaque at contest. If we remember the three important words, (Dedication, Discipline, Desire) we will be successful.

Sincerely
Michael Hanson
