WINTER ACTIVITIES

The santa on the classroom door and the old fashioned Christmas tree greeted students as they entered the Second Grade classroom. The tree decorated with fabric ornaments respresenting children from around the world as well as student crafted ornaments.

One small bulletin board in the classroom was covered with greeting cards from around the world as well as more to read placed on the counter

Other small bulletin board areas above the counter had displays from Germany, Mexico, Sweden, and other countries. The children enjoyed studying traditions in these countries and then learning our own traditions which came to us from some of these countries. We listened to music, played games, and ate foods from around the world.

After reading about the history of ginerbread, we read several versions of The Gingerbread Boy and did a chart showing Compare and Contrast. We liked eating our own little gingerbread cookies. Then we practiced our writing skills by writing riddles to guess which picture matched our descriptions.

Listening to The Nutcracker story and to the music inspired us to make our own little nutcrackers which went home filled with goodies.

Our special ornament gifts to our families were made by painting craft sticks and then gluing htem into a frame to hold our photo. A holiday ribbon completed the ornament.

Stories telling us facts about reindeer and stories telling tales of reindeer like Rudolph were fun when we added puzzles, books, puppets, and a VCR tape to the center.

After the holidays, we began our new year with THE GREAT SNOWBALL BOOK BLITZ reading incentive program. We were randomly placed on a team to challenge each other to read books and put the information on a snowball. Team A read the most books and Team B read the most pages. We celebrated by watching THE SNOWMAN while eating snowballs (I mean popcorn balls).

During February we celebrated Valentine's Day with several activities such as writing all about our favorite books.

Then we wrote riddles describing ourselves by telling our favorite things. It was fun to guess who the person was who filled our the questionaire. Below we had many heart activities to do which we found stored inside of the candy heart boxes.

Our study of famous African-Americans inspired this Black History Month bulletin board with fact cards and books. Martin Luther King, Jr. was remembered on Jan. 15.

Students chose a topic of interest for this enrichment activity of learning how to use a variety of resources to do research. Some children were interested in Giraffes.

Others chose Cheetahs, Cobras, Spiders, Snakes, and Mummies. Research boards were on display above the lockers during Parent-Teacher Conferences. Groups gave their very interesting presentations to the class. It was amazing how much these children learned.

After finishing our READ TO WIN reading incentive program, we entered March with our READ ACROSS AMERICA celebration. This special day is choses to coinside with the birthdate of the late Dr. Seuss. We were excited to find out who our mystery guest readers were. At 9 AM, Supt. Dan Novak surprised us with the story Yertle the Turtle. Then throughout the day, five other mystery guest readers arrived.

Our bulletin board caption explains itself...OUR FAVORITE DR. SEUSS CHARACTERS.
