acgal21.gif (10936 bytes) Library Checkout

Please remind your child to return their library books by Thursdays.  They are invited to check out two books each week if they return the previously checked out books. I appreciate your help on this!  The class will meet with Ms. Reinke, the school librarian, once a month for library instruction.

Reading Connection!

Here are more ideas for helping your child play around with sounds in order to become a better reader.  Your child needs to also be able to separate, or segment, sounds of word, without thinking about the letters.  Manipulating sounds will also help your child be a better speller.

*Say the following words normally.  Then have your child stretch out each word, sound by sound.  For example, say"bat". Your child should say "/b/ /a/ /t/".  Othe words to use include lap, bit, go, and red.

*Give your child four counters and say a word. Ask your child to push up a counter for each sound they hear in the word.  If you said" hand", your child will push up four counters for the four sounds heard.  Remember this game is played only with the sounds that makeup words, not the letters.

*Have fun practicing taking apart sounds of words, using cereal or checker pieces as counters.  Put the counters in a straight line.  Say a word, such as big.  Have your child push up one counter while saying each sound-/b/ /i/ /g/.  Do this with other words, such as man, get, did, and sip.

*At school, many children choose to "write around the room".  This is where they write down familiar words and then come over and read the words to me.  It is a great way to build confidence in themselves as readers and more they proactice the better they will read.  Encourage your child to write words in your home.  It is very helpful to let them read their list to you.  You could also make a list and read your words to your child!

What are we doing in math?

In kindergarten we have been working on several areas. The children enjoy using manipulatives to explore these skills:

Adding numbers 0-5.  We are starting to do two minute timed tests and will hopefully be improving our times.

Count to 100 by tens and fives.  Once that is mastered start working on twos to twenty.

  Counting objects to 100

Identifying those numbers 0-100...activity to practice this skill                    Randomly write the numbers on a chalkboardor paper.  Give child an eraser or marker and have him/her erase the letter or color over the number you describe.  Give clues such as  "I am the number that comes after 78,"  and "I have 7 tens and 8 ones." I would start with a small amount of numbers in the scramble and increase the amount with child's success.

Writing numbers to 100

Creating and extending patterns using objects or colors

Number words from one to ten...Look for number words in the newspaper, coupons, or magazines.  Cut them out and put in order.

Homework-Make tallies for points earned in a game or just to practice counting.

Homework-Make small piles of objects, each one having a different amount (20-50). Using a set of number cards, ask your child to count each pile and assign a number card to it.

Homework- How many steps to your bedroom?  Write the number down, What comes before that number?, What comes after that number?

Homework- Give your child a handful of change and ask them to identify pennies, nickels, dimes, quarters.  Remind them that dimes and quarters have ridges!  You can also ask them the values of the coins.  We did add some combinations of the coins but this skill was hard for most!
