One major benefit to being a member of FBLA is the opportunity to participate in local, state, and national community efforts. Locally, the chapter is able to directly touch the lives of those in the Elmwood and Murdock Communities. At a state and national level, FBLA is able to participate in efforts that greatly impact the lives of people across this nation. |

State Partnerships
Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD)
Elmwood-Murdock FBLA supported the Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD) organization in the 2004-2005 school year. Chapter members were allowed to wear jeans to one of the Elmwood-Murdock monthly meetings by paying a $1 to the MADD fund. The same benefit was offered at the State Leadership Conference dance in Omaha.
In addition, the Elmwood-Murdock chapter participated in a “Lick Drunk Driving” campaign and sold Ozark Delight Suckers. The chapter raised a total of $130 that was donated to MADD.
Quality Members
This year, Elmwood-Murdock FBLA Executive Board set a goal that five members would qualify for the “All-State Quality Members Award.” Club members surpassed that goal! Eight members, including Ashley Buck, Amanda Mills, Brandon Minch, Ryan Rosenow, Mikaela Shrader, Morgan Smith, Colt Stander, and Scott Stille were honored at the State Leadership Conference in Omaha with the award.
Nebraska Competency Fellowship Fund
At the state-level, the Elmwood-Murdock Chapter of FBLA also recognized the value of providing scholarships. The chapter donated $25 to the Nebraska Competency Fellowship Fund during the 2004-2005 school year.
Tally It Up
This year, members of the Elmwood-Murdock chapter reported 724 community service hours to the state vice-president for the state Tally It Up project.
Funding Factory
Elmwood-Murdock FBLA members collected 60 printer ink cartridges and 33 cell phones to raise money for the school through the recycling company called the Funding Factory.
National Partnerships
i-SAFE America

The Internet is still so new. I-SAFE works to educate children, parents, the schools, and community on how to keep children safe while using Internet resources. Elmwood-Murdock FBLA concluded its “Safety Smart from the Start” campaign by educating elementary students, high school students, and parents about the safety concerns of using the Internet. An assembly was given to 7-12th grade students in February 2005; and a similar assembly was given to grades 4-6 in February 2005, to educate students about the hazards of providing personal information online, the unlawfulness of downloading music, and the techniques used to respond to inappropriate online behavior.
At Parent-Teacher Conferences in February 2005, parents were reminded how online predators can infect computers, steal personal information, and harm people and their computers. FBLA members provided parents with helpful tips and reminders to be used to recognize potentially hazardous situations and taught them how to respond appropriately. Members used the i-SAFE America curriculum in the development of the workshop.
March of Dimes
 |
“Make Life Bearable for Babies” — The Elmwood-Murdock Future Business Leaders of America chapter proudly promoted the March of Dimes' slogan this year. Chapter members learned about the importance of nonprofit organizations and became champions for the March of Dimes.
The March of Dimes, founded by former President Franklin Delano Roosevelt, is a nonprofit organization that strives to help America's babies. FBLA members learned about the March of Dimes by assisting with their fundraisers.
To educate the public as to the mission of the March of Dimes, bands were sold at basketball games and Parent-Teacher Conferences. People were encouraged to write the name of a baby they knew on the band. Bands that were signed were linked together in the babies’ honor. The reception and support from the public was fantastic.
Additional money was raised in a unique way. Tiny, premature diapers were placed on soda pop cans and sold at basketball games. With this visual, people were immediately struck with how very small these babies are and how we must help them in their fight for life. The chapter also sold Data Match surveys to help support the March of Dimes. A total of $242.20 was donated to the March of Dimes.
Business Achievement Awards
Two members from Elmwood-Murdock FBLA, Mikalea Shrader and Morgan Smith, were presented with the Future Award for the Individual Member Recognition Program and the 2004 State Leadership Conference. The Future Award recognizes basic business skills, community service, and FBLA involvement at the local level.
This year, Trent Shrader submitted an entry for the Future Award and Mikalea Shrader submitted an entry for the Business Award. These are awarded at the Nebraska State Leadership Conference. The Future Award is a prerequisite of the Business Award which focuses on local, regional/district and state involvement; intermediate business skills; and leadership in the community.
The Elmwood-Murdock chapter anticipates being named an “Outstanding Chapter” at the State and National Conferences. The Outstanding Chapter requires the completion of 15 activities between last and this year’s Spring State Leadership Conference.
National Scholarship Fund
The Elmwood-Murdock Chapter of FBLA recognized the value of providing scholarships by donating $30 to the National Scholarship Fund. The chapter also recognized National Celebrations by participating in American Enterprise Day and FBLA-PBL Week.
In order to promote free enterprise at the community level, several articles were distributed to two local newspapers. A “Letter to the Editor” brought special attention to American Enterprise Day and encouraged patrons to focus on the advantages of living in a free enterprise society. In addition, a flyer was created and placed on car windshields parked in the business districts of Elmwood and Murdock.
