About Learn and Serve

Service-learning combines service to the community with student learning in a way that improves both the student and the community.  Learn and Serve is a method where students learn and develop through active participation in thoughtfully organized service that is conducted in and meets the needs of communities.  The learn and serve grant is coordinated with an elementary school, secondary school, institution of higher education, or community service program and the community to help foster civic responsibility.

Let's Create!

Elmwood-Murdock was the recipient of a Learn and Serve Grant which is designed to provide students with service learning opportunities.   Service Learning involves students in community activities that complement classroom studies.  It aims to help students increase their academic skills through understanding how what they learn in school can help the local community and beyond.

The Elmwood-Murdock district has named the Elmwood Public Library as its community partner and plans to implement a project entitled "Let's CREATE!" CREATE is an acronym for Creating Reading Enthusiasm with Art, Technology, and Economics and is designed to provide students with art, technology and economics lessons while creating marketable products that will benefit the library.

The Future Business Leaders of America along with Mrs. Schutz are vital components of the project.   The grant provided financial resources for the the district so Mrs. Schutz can visit each elementary classroom twice a month.  With her assistance and that of other local artists, the students will learn about famous artists and different art techniques. The Elmwood-Murdock SOS organization generously donated $1,500 worth of art supplies to enhance the project.

During the year, students will design art work which will be sold in an art gallery run by the elementary students. There will also be an art show  where different art pieces can be purchased at an auction.  Students will utilize technology to create and maintain online galleries and auctions where patrons can bid on the students' work.   The Future Business Leaders will facilitate the economic and business lessons for this project by helping the elementary students understand the workings of the American Enterprise System and teaching them important techniques needed to run a profitable business.

The Elmwood Public Library has been making the effort to improve its children's section.  With the help of the Learn & Serve Grant, professional artist Ruth Nichols will work with elementary students to create a "fairy tale" mural on the wall.  Students will also be involved in creating book shelves for a castle theme area for students to enjoy. Art will also be used in creating bookmarks, posters, and a Elmwood Public Library Web Site.

"Let's CREATE!" will provide many benefits for the Elmwood-Murdock elementary children.  They will not only learn about art, technology, and economics; but they will create reading enthusiasm by serving their community; specifically, the Elmwood Public Library.
